- Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from a public or registered private university or independent college (including registered institutions in Hong Kong) or from a foreign university recognized by the Ministry of Education. Additionally, applicants must have at least 2 years of work experience, excluding military service. They must pass the entrance examination for the Master's degree program in the school to be eligible for admission.
- If a new student is unable to attend due to serious illness, they must submit relevant documentation before registration to request a one-year deferment of admission.
Article 2: Duration of Study
- The duration of study is 2 to 5 years. Students who perform exceptionally well may apply for early graduation, which will be subject to review and approval by the program committee.
- Students may apply for a leave of absence on a semester basis, with the total leave not exceeding two academic years. If the leave is extended due to serious illness or exceptional circumstances, students must submit the initial draft of their thesis, evaluation from their advisor, and other supporting documents (such as a hospital diagnosis certificate and medical records within the past six months for illness-related applications). This will be subject to approval by the program committee and the dean of academic affairs. If a student has taken more than one year of leave (including maternity leave), they may apply to resume their studies early on a semester basis. Students applying for leave due to pregnancy, childbirth, or child-rearing of children under the age of 3 must provide relevant documents, such as a health insurance certificate from a regional hospital or a birth certificate, and this period will not count toward the leave of absence limit.
Article 3: Credit System and Course Requirements
- In addition to the required courses "Specialized Seminar" and "Thesis Research," students must complete at least 24 credits. Among these, at least 12 credits must be from the student's major courses, and the remaining credits can be from other courses within the program.
- Professional courses from the relevant departments within the associated school can count toward the 24 credits, but they must be approved by the course instructor and the program director. If a student chooses courses from the major department’s professional courses, the credits may count toward the 12-credit requirement for the major.
- Credits outside of the above-mentioned courses will not count toward the 24-credit requirement.
- The required courses for the program are "Specialized Seminar" and "Thesis Research." The "Specialized Seminar" is 0 credits and must be passed over four semesters, while "Thesis Research" is 2 credits, requiring the completion of three semesters, totaling 6 credits. If a student changes their advisor, they must complete two additional semesters of this course with their new advisor.
- Students who have taken relevant courses from the institute's professional programs (including credit-based classes) before admission may submit the relevant transcript. With the program director's approval, they may apply for credit exemptions according to the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University's credit exemption policy, with a maximum of 12 credits allowed for exemption.
- If a student was enrolled in another graduate program within three years before entering the program and has completed courses that match those offered in the current program, they may submit the relevant documents to apply for credit exemption, with a maximum of 12 credits allowed for exemption.
Article 4: Thesis Supervision
- Students must confirm their thesis advisor by the end of the first semester of their second academic year and submit an agreement form with their advisor. If they are unable to find an advisor by the deadline, the program committee will assist them. Advisors must be full-time faculty members from the same department. If the advisor is another faculty member or an expert, it must be approved by the department's program committee and the program director.
- After confirming the thesis advisor and submitting the agreement form, students must engage in thesis research for at least three semesters before they can apply for their thesis defense.
- If students want to add a co-advisor after submitting the agreement form, they must submit a co-advisor application form. After approval from the original advisor, new co-advisor, department program committee, and program director, the co-advisor can be added.
- After submitting the agreement form, students may apply to change their thesis advisor. The request must be accompanied by an explanation, and it must be approved by the original advisor, new advisor, department program committee, and program director. A student can only change their advisor once. After changing advisors, students must wait at least two semesters before applying for their thesis defense. If the original advisor does not agree and no consensus is reached through negotiation, the program committee will make a decision.
- If an advisor wishes to terminate the advisor-student relationship, they must submit a written request to the program. The program committee will review the request and notify the student of the decision.
- If a student requests to terminate the thesis advisor relationship or change advisors, they must obtain the original advisor's consent to use the original research ideas and outcomes as part of their thesis.
- If a student's thesis violates academic ethics or is found to have fabricated, altered, plagiarized, ghostwritten, or otherwise engaged in academic dishonesty, the thesis committee will review the situation, and the advisor will be held accountable for the corresponding responsibility.
Article 5: Graduation
- After completing at least one semester of study and fulfilling the course requirements for the Master's degree program, students can submit their thesis and apply for the Master's thesis defense. After passing the defense and submitting the final thesis, the university will confer the Master's degree. If the required courses and credits are completed after the semester ends, the student can still apply for an early defense with the advisor's recommendation, but the degree will only be conferred after completing the coursework and credits.
- The degree defense includes both the oral defense and thesis review.
- The Master's degree oral defense will be conducted with 3 to 5 committee members (including the advisor). The committee must attend in person, and the defense may also be conducted via video or in writing if necessary. The defense is public, and the time, location, and thesis topic must be announced in advance.
- The committee for the defense will be approved by the program director, but the advisor cannot serve as the chairperson.
- The degree exam will be graded on a scale, with B- (70%) as the passing grade and A+ (100%) as the highest grade. The average score of the attending committee members will be used to determine the final grade, but if more than half of the committee members fail, the student will be considered to have failed.
- If the thesis is found to have fabricated, altered, plagiarized, or otherwise engaged in academic dishonesty, the student will receive a zero score for their thesis defense.
Article 6: Expulsion
Students who do not pass the degree exam or fail to complete the required coursework within the stipulated study period will be expelled.
Article 7: Thesis Language
The Master's thesis (including the abstract) should be written in Chinese or English and must adhere to the "National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Thesis Format Guidelines." After passing the defense, the thesis abstract and full text must be uploaded electronically and submitted in three copies (one for the program, one for the university library, and one for the Ministry of Education-designated storage unit).
Article 8: Revocation of Degree
The university will revoke a Master's or Doctoral degree if any of the following conditions occur:
- Admission requirements or academic performance were falsified or fraudulent.
- The thesis was fabricated, altered, plagiarized, ghostwritten, or otherwise involved in academic dishonesty. If a degree is revoked, the individual will be notified to return the degree certificate, and relevant notifications will be sent to other institutions.
Article 9: Implementation
These regulations are implemented after approval by the program committee, review by the school and university curriculum committees, and final approval by the Academic Affairs Committee. Modifications will follow the same process.
Note:These Regulations are adopted in Chinese, which shall prevail in case of any discrepancy between the English translation and the Chinese original.
